Facts about Russia:
«St. Petersburg»
St. Petersburg is Russia's Imperial capital in the truest sence - Europe's first and only purpose-built capital city, conceived as the seat of Emperors that would put Europe's other royal capitals to shame! And like the best Russian projects, built with almost unlimited funds, by the best who could be found anywhere!
If Moscow is Russia's medieval fortified stronghold, then St. Petersburg is the jewel in its rococo crown. St. Petersburg was the private, personal project of Tsar Peter the Great - who saw the potential of a wil area of nothern bogland, islands and marshes, and carved Europe's most sophisticated new capital there from scratch. German engineers, Italian architects, French philosophers, Belgian patissers, Spanish governesses, Swiss bankers - a bottomless budget summoned the best that Europe could muster to build the new city. In fact the true honours for building the new city must go to Peter's later successor, Catherine the Great - a lifelong admirer of St. Petersburg and Russian culture, despite having been born in Germany as Princess Sophie of Anhalt-Zerbst. Despite a near-tragedy during WW2 that saw the city besieged and nearly starved out of existence, today's post-soviet St. Petersburg has been lovingly restored - once again taking the place Tsar Peter imagined for it, as the city that would be the envy of Europe.
ST PETERSBURG MUST SEE: The Winter Palace & Hermitage State Collection, The Peter & Paul Fortress. The Russian Museum, the Yusupov Palace, Canal-Boat Trip, Jewish Heritage
ST PETERSBURG EXCURSIONS & DAY-TRIPS: Peterhof Palace, Pavlovsk Palace, Tsarskoe Selo or Pushkin (the Catherine Palace), Kronstadt, other Royal Palaces around St. Petersburg

«St. Valentine’s Day in Russia»
Soon we will celebrate the most romantic holiday in the year - St. Valentine's day . This is a quite new holiday to us - came to Russia early 1990. Even it's not official holiday people do love the idea of this nice holiday. At school children exchange valentines or make special box where you can put the secret love letter, and hold the special parties and events. Night clubs or restaurants organize special program and menu to make this very day as more romantic as possible.
If you are fallen in love you Valentnine's Day is the great opportunity to open your feelings, to share them. As for present usually people in Russia give flowers (red or pink rose), choсolate or jewelry and go the restaurant. The other option is to spend time at the hotel since every hotel (for exapmle, in Moscow or in St. Petersburg) offer a special program which might be including accommodation, dinner, SPA etc.
But St. Valentine's Day is not only romantic holiday in Russia. On July, 08 we have the day of St. Peter and St. Fevronia as known as the Day of Family, Love and Faithfulness.
The story of Duke Peter and peasant woman Fevronia goes back us to the 16th Century. After the battle with the snake Duke Peter was infected with the snake's venom and only country maid Fevronia was able to heal him. They fell in love and got married. But local arictocrtas were dissatisfied with idea of new peasant Duchess . They offered Fevronia any jewelries or riches she could probably want to have in return to leave the city and never come back. But for Fevronia the only wealth was her husband, Duke Peter, and she took him. After the couple left Murom town where they lived went out of order and aristocrats asked Duke and Duchess to return and they agreed.
Their last days were in separate monasteries. They prayed to die on the same day and to be buried in the same grave. But as on Russian Orthodox Church rules they coudn't be buried in the same grave since they were a monk and a nun and therefore they were buried separately. A day after their bodies were dissapered and to everyone's surpise found in one coffin. It was happened several times and, finally, Orthodox Church agreed to bury them in the same grave where they are still.
Since 2008, this day is marked as the official holiday in Russia and celebrated as a day of family and gladness in marriage.

«Transport»
The quickest and the easiest (once you figured out how it works) in big cities is metro. It opens at 06:00AM and closes at 01:00AM, there are no zones, no express trains. The metro system is very simple, and it's the same for Moscow and St. Petersburg. You buy a card for 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 trips, the trip is over as you go out of metro. Good idea to share cards between two or three persons (you will save your money).
It's quite a challenge to use taxies in Russia as the cars don't have meters and you are supposed to negotiate the price first. In Russian!

If you pick up the phone, you will hear Stalin’s voice, and you can hear and see Leo Tolstoy. The exposition devoted to Matilda Kshesinskaya tells the story of the owner of the mansion. During the last centuries the town has performed a very important role in the history of Russia being a naval outpost built to protect St Petersburg. Its history is closely connected with the name of Peter the Great, with the establishing and strengthening of the Russian Navy, outstanding discoveries and inventions of Russian scientists and the events of the Second World War. There are a lot of historical, cultural and technical monuments in Kronstadt. The unique hydrotechnical and defensive structures, marvelous buildings and architectural ensembles such as the Kronshlot fort, the complex of provincial houses of the beginning of the XVIII century, docks of Peter the Great and others. And of course the gem of the city is the marvelous Naval Cathedral of St. Nicholas. There is a multitude of churches in Russia dedicated to St. Nicholas, but none is so grandiose as the Kronstadt Naval Cathedral of St. Nicholas, consecrated 100 years ago. The enormous cathedral was built with the personal aid of the last Russian Tzar Nicholas II and consecrated in June 1913, during the 300th anniversary year of the Romanov dynasty. The cathedral's dedication to St. Nicholas reflected not only the role of that saint as the protector of seafarers, but also a connection to the imperial patron, Nicholas II.

Facts about Russia:
«Magadan»
 |
Magadan is the administrative center of the Magadan region, the youngest regional center of the Far East. It is located on the coast in the northern part of the Sea of Okhotsk on the isthmus connecting the Staritsky Peninsula with the mainland, and that is why the city of Magadan is situated literally at the “end of the world”. It is an important trade and transport center, the largest commercial seaport. |
The history of Magadan founding is connected with the Gold Rush in Alaska at the end of the 19th century. In the 20s of the 20th century, the leadership of the USSR became interested in the Chukotka region because of the huge gold deposits in its bowels. For the development of the gold mining industry, the village of Magadan was founded here, which expanded due to the arrival of geologists, engineers, and subsequently grew into a big city due to the arrival of political and criminal prisoners sent here by the Gulag.
Chukotka and Kolyma mastered at a stunning pace. Exploration and development of gold deposits, laying in the taiga of the thousand-kilometer Kolyma tract, the construction of Magadan, mines and camps went on simultaneously, despite the most difficult climatic conditions, lack of equipment and transport inaccessibility of these places.
Bone Road or Kolyma Tract
This is the infamous abandoned track leading from Magadan to Yakutsk. The road began to be built in 1932. In connection with the development of the mining industry in the 1920s, in Yakutia and Kolyma, the Soviet state began to create a network of local roads using the labor of prisoners of Gulag. Gulag prisoners punched a path through the impregnable mountains of the Sette Dabaan, Suntar-Khayat ranges … During the years of repression, about 800 thousand Soviet prisoners passed along the Kolyma tract. Half of them remained there. Local old-timers remember how icy corpses lay along the road. From overwhelming slave labor, cold and hunger, prisoners died en masse. They were not buried – there was no strength for this, they were laid right under the roadbed and they served as a natural sealant for the soil coating of the tract. For this reason, the tract was called the “road on the bones.”
Mask of sorrow
Among the many monuments, there are two landmarks in Magadan that are of all-Russian fame: The Mask of Sorrow and Time. In memory of the victims of mass repressions who ruined their lives in forced labor, the monument “Mask of Sorrow” was erected in the city of Magadan on the slope of the Krutoy hill. The official opening took place on June 12, 1996. Funds for the creation and installation of the sculpture were donated by the President of Russia B. Yeltsin, and the government, and the Magadan city administration. The initiator and author of the project was the famous Russian sculptor Ernst Neizvestny. His parents were among the first victims of the mass repression of the 1930s. The sculpture is made of roughly turned concrete in the shape of a face. It reaches a height of 15 meters, and the pedestal is laid with granite boulders.
Mammoth Statue “Time”
In 2013 was opened the monument “Time” in Magadan, a mammoth made of metal structures. The remains of mammoths are characteristic not only of the Magadan region, but it was in this region in the 1980s that they found the perfectly preserved corpse of a mammoth, which was given the name Dima. The main idea of the monument is time, its movement forward, a certain connection between the past and the future. The author interprets his work as follows: “Mammoths on our northern land lived several million years ago, when they became extinct, a man came to the northern land and began to build mines, which also ceased to function over time.” Thus, sculpture is the personification of the past, and all the details of which it is made symbolize our time. The monument is not protected by any coatings and rusts over time in the salty sea wind, acquiring a reddish-brown color, which this ancestor of modern elephants had.
Sea of Okhotsk

The Sea of Okhotsk is the coldest sea of the Pacific Ocean. The unique nature of the cold coast of Magadan leaves no one indifferent. In terms of fish stocks, this sea occupies a leading position in the diversity of fish species (more than 300 species). Commercial fish include more than 25 species. Salmon, herring, cod, pollock, flounder, sea bass are caught here. A valuable species is the salmon family. They winter in the Pacific Ocean, spawn in the rivers of Kamchatka and Sakhalin. You can have a great time here for amateur fishing. Fishing is a pleasure and pleasantly surprises with a variety of different types of fish. A large number of flounder, cod, herring, chum salmon, ruff, which are designed for fishing, both from boats and from the shore.

The incredibly picturesque and distant island attracts adventurers who are not afraid of difficulties and lack of civilization, but who appreciate the beauty of wildlife and solitude.
Sakhalin is an island which impresses with its nature. Therefore, nobody should miss the charms of the Sea of Okhotsk and the Sea of Japan, the beauty of landscapes and sunsets, the places of power, the unusual world of fauna and of course marine life, such as sea lions on the rocks in Nevelsk.
Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk city tour
Walking tour of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk including the visiting of Local Lore Museum. The Museum was designed in Japanese architectural stile as an evidence of the impact of this culture on the lifestyle of the island inhabitants. The museum exhibition features a rare collection of Sakhalin Aboriginal culture objects, paleontological collections, original documents, photographs and objects that reflect the complex history of the Sakhalin island and the Kuril Islands in the 19th-20th centuries. After acquaintance with the history, it is the best to get an unforgettable experience on a cable car to the skiing resort “Mountain Air”, There is an observation deck that offers a spectacular view of the city.
Novikovo village and the Aniva Lighthouse
The Aniva Lighthouse is one of the most inaccessible lighthouses in Russia. It saved ships from death on rocky shores for almost 80 years. Strong currents and constant fog surround the lighthouse. The road to the Aniva lighthouse runs along the Aniva Bay in a motor boat, where everyone will enjoy the beauty of the magnificent mountains, the sea air and waterfalls falling down, and with luck, dolphins, killer whales and seals, until it appears on the horizon – a ghost lighthouse looking out from for the fog. After getting off to the shore at Marble Cape, the excursion returns to Novikovo village, where lunch will be held on the sea shore with fresh seafood including crabs. Upon returning to the city, there is an opportunity to take a quick look at the Blue Lake. Once these were coal mines which were then filled with water. Due to the high content of various chemicals, the lakes have acquired a wonderful turquoise color.
The Velikan Cape and the Ptichiy Cape
The excursion to the Velikan (Giant) Cape and the Ptichiy (Birds’) Cape is a trip to the unforgettable unique natural monuments. These capes are known not only by their unusual names. The nature created the whole natural assembly out of these two magnificent “brothers”. They are totally worth being seen. It seems like two stone giants protect the emerald-colored taiga and bottomless waters of the Sea of Okhotsk. This place has its unique ambience, that is hard to describe and even photos can not show its true beauty. The flavor of the excursion is catching sea urchins – the main Sakhalin delicacy. People hunt for it during ebb tide. Its caviar is good for health, and the catching process itself is fascinating and enthralling.
Tikhaya Bay
An another entertaining adventure is an excursion to Tikhaya (Quiet) Bay. This is a place for taking photos at every turn: the variety of rare plants - marine briar rose, lungwort, spikenard, thermopsis - cover the foot of the bay, and curious sea lions, noisy seagulls, crab market and amber collecting are the most enthralling and beautiful things that even would be. The true beauty of the bay, hidden from waves and winds, give a great pleasure of seeing local attractions, named Сrab Paradise for a reason.
Busse lake
Busse Lake (lagoon) is a natural monument and one of the most unforgettable places on Sakhalin Island, due to the fame of its delicacies. Giant oysters, scallops, sea urchins, trepangs, crabs, trumpeters and many other species of marine life live here in this unique place. During the tour, visitors will have to taste almost the whole variety of Sakhalin seafood that tourists can gather themselves. What could be better than freshly caught oysters for lunch with a glass of sparkling wine! This is one of the most amazing and “delicious” trips.

«Trains»
Trains in Russia are of a different standard than those on Europe. Only fast trains running between Moscow & St.Petersburg remind European trains. The most popular are sleeper trains as due to vast distances in Russia, almost wherever you travel to, you spend at least 1 night on the train. 2nd class carriages (KUPE) have compartments with 4 berths each (2 upper berths and 2 lower berths). The compartments are small and your luggage travels there as well! 1st class carriages are the same, just two upper berths were taken away. Of course, it gives more space in a compartment and fewer people in the carriage queuing to use the toilet in the morning.
The toilets are located at each end of a carriage, inside there are sockets as well, so you can use electricity in the train. There is a boiler near conductor's compartment. Moreover every train has a diner carriage, where you can have a meal.
Please note that in Russia all train tickets appear on sale 45 days prior to departure date. That is why they can`t be booked but have to be issued right away instead.
Facts about Russia:
«Ekaterinburg»
Welcome to Ekaterinburg, the capital of the Ural Mountains and the gateway to Siberia!
The city was founded as a factory-fort in 1723 by the will of Peter the Great and was named after two Yekaterinas – Peter’s wife (later Empress Catherine I), and the Russian patron saint of mining. In very short time after that, the city got status of the administrative center of all Urals and Siberian metal and mining works.
The 19th century was a time of prosperity, gold had been discovered and, with investment from local merchants, led to mining in both the Ekaterinburg region and into Siberia. The discoverers, mostly the so-called old-believers tried to keep away from the official capitals of Central Russia, so the shower of gold poured upon and into the capital of the Urals. In fact it was the first ‘Gold Rush’ in world history.
The city of Ekaterinburg, which in Soviet times was known as Sverdlovsk, played a key role in the history of Russia in the twentieth century. The Revolution and Civil War started here with the bloody murder of last Russian Tsar Nickolay Romanov and his family in 1918. Stalin’s struggle against the “class enemies” in the 1930’s turned the city into the largest transshipment point for prisoners of the GULAG (system of exploitation of the workforce) who were sent to work on the development of the vast lands of Siberia. In the tragic years of World War II, it was here, in the hundreds of factories which had been relocated from all over Russia, that the famous Russian military weaponry was being produced. It is also in Ekaterinburg between the 1940’s and 50’s, that the greatest Russian military leader of World War II, Marshal Georgy Zhoukov, spent the years of his “exile”.
A new obelisk on “Europe-Asia” borderline (17 km. drive from the city) was built in 2004 as a first stage of a great project “Ekaterinburg is Euro-Asian Russian Capital”.

Russian Maslenitsa
It is also known as Butter Week or Pancake week, is an Eastern Slavic religious and folk holiday.
On the Christian side, Maslenitsa is the last week before the onset of Great Lent. During the week of Maslenitsa, meat is forbidden to Orthodox Christians. It is the last week during which milk, cheese and other dairy products are permitted. The most characteristic food of Maslenitsa is bliny (pancakes). Round and golden, they are made from the rich foods still allowed by the Orthodox tradition that week: butter, eggs and milk. By the way they symbolize sun comes after the long cold winter.
Maslenitsa is a very happy week. Everyday there is a special activity. For example, on Tuesday
different games are held in the open air. Everyone can take part in them. On Wednesday you have to visit your mother-in-law and eat pancakes at her place. On Thursday you can go sled-riding. On Sunday a straw effigy symbolizing winter is burnt.
This week ended with the first day of the Lent – Clean Monday, which was considered the day of purification from sin and fast forbidden food. On Clean Monday people usually washed in a bath; women washed dishes, cleaning them from grease and remains of forbidden food.
Nowadays this festival still a good tradition for all people living in Russia. Everybody is happy to regale with pancakes, ask for forgiveness, and meet coming spring.

St. Petersburg's debatable status is "the Venice of the North". The city is almost entirely built on a series of islands across the delta of the Neva River. At the end of the 19th century it stood at 101. Many of them are, of course, only nominally islands, separated one from another by narrow canals or rivers and connected by the city's 342 bridges to form two seemingly continuous strips of land along the banks of the Neva.
The most interesting are Vasilyevsky Island, Krestovsky Island, Yelagin Island, Kamenny Island, Aptekarsky Island etc.

«Yakutsk»
The Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) is the largest administrative and territorial subdivision part of the Russian Federation. It occupies one-fifth of the territory of Russia. The Republic of Sakha is not only the biggest but also the coldest land. Over 40% of its territory is beyond the Arctic Circle. It’s the country of contrasts.
Yakutia is a land of dense taiga wilderness and immense tundra zones, hundreds of thousands of large and small rivers and lakes, harsh mountain ranges and ice arctic regions, primeval nature, original culture and warm open people.
Yakutsk is the capital city of the Sakha Republic.
It is situated on the Lena River.Just an hour flight from Irkutsk and you are here to enjoy the most beautiful nature and permafrost.
The city is famous for its unique mammoth research institute. Every day the remains of mammoth are found on the vast territories of the region.
The establishment of the World Mammoth Museum in 1991 as a scientific and cultural center for the study of the mammoth fauna and its habitat and the promotion of scientific knowledge was initiated by the first Yakut paleontologist Petr Alekseyevich Lazarev. Since 2007, the museum staff began to make the collection of the Institute of Applied Ecology of the North (all paleontological materials, collected as part of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic Sakha (Yakutia), has been transferred to the Ministry of Property Relations of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). The large collection of fossil remains of the mammoth fauna animals of almost all the representatives of the mammoth fauna of the North-Eastern Siberia and unique mammal fossils with soft tissues was gathered in a short time. Now there are 1450 objects in an osteological collection of the Mammoth Museum.

Buluus
Buluus is a unique natural object. Few places in the world can find a place with so many contrasts. Buluus is the unique source of the underground water which shapes the ice fields of clean fresh water which do not melt even in the warmest days.

The word “Buluss” is translated from Yakut language as “glacier” or “cellar”. This place is admitted as the landscape and hydrological nature Reserve of republican significance.
In some places the thickness of the ice field reaches 3 meters.
The fresh water of Buluus is the cleanest one. During summer time the glacier partially begins to melt and forms the cavities which resemble tunnels. When the temperature in summer over the glacier is +30°C and higher, inside it is twice lower.
The temperature of the water inside the glacier is permanent throughout a year (0,1 – 0,2оС). The water of Buluus has a high quality and contains necessary microelements for human organism.

The Lena Pillars
The geological formations known as the Lena Pillars have fascinated travellers here since the 17th century. About 140km upriver from Yakutsk, the rock of the cliffs alongside the river has been eroded away into delicate shapes of a reddish brown colour.

The extremely steep column are made of kimbery limestone with the surrounding softer rock being eroded over the millennium. The rocks are 150-300 meters high and become more and more beautiful and mysterious by the means of local climatic conditions. The temperature here varies from lower than -40 °C in winter to almost +40°C in summer period.
Since July, 2012 Lena Pillars are inscribed in the list of UNESCO World Heritage as one of the most amazing places on the planet with perfect natural ecosystem.
The Kingdom of Permafrost
Yakutsk is surrounded by many hills. In the Soviet era the tunnel in one of them, located near the mountain Chochur Muran, was used as a huge cellar for food storage. In November 2008, tourist center “The Kingdom of Permafrost” was opened here.

At the entrance to the “Kingdom” visitors receive warm coats and boots. It is necessary because in summer the temperature in the tunnel is minus 4 degrees Celsius. But in winter the temperature does not fall below minus 10 degrees C, so after minus 50 degrees C outside it is a good place to get warm. If you look at the walls, you will see what permafrost is with your own eyes: all the moisture in the soil is frozen, and the land is literally penetrated with icy veins. Ice forms crystals that shine in the light of colored lamps. The tunnel is divided into several rooms inside. The visitors are welcomed in the first room by the Lord of the Cold Chyskhaan – his residence is located here.
There is a ritual hall for traditional Yakut ritual ceremonies. You can ride ice slides and stare at the ice sculptures in one more room. It is allowed to touch sculptures – for happiness, for fulfillment of wishes. Do not forget to have your vodka at ice bar from an glass made of ice.
Treasury of the Republic of Sakha

-
Full day Temple of Heaven/Forbidden City/Summer Palace Forbidden City, built in 1420, lived only the emperors, the empresses, the eunuchs and the concubines, for anyone els to set a foot in here was unthinkable. It was isolated from the rest of Beijing by a moat and a city wall. The 73 hectare rectangular city, as a museum since 1925, is visited by around 200.000 people from all over a day. The Temple of Heaven, built at the same time with the Forbidden City was the place where the emperor, the son of God of Heaven, prayed on Winter Solstice. The Summer Palace, used as the summer resort for the emperial families, was destroyed and rebuilt again and again. Now both the Temple of Heaven and the Summer Palace are public parks.
- Full day Great Wall / Ming Tomb. Construction of loosing sections of The Great Wall took place at the 3rd century BC. Then it was linked together and reenforced by Qin Shihuangdi the first emperor of China. It started from Bohai Bay to the east of China and ends up in the far northwest in Gansu Province. The total length of it was 6000 kilometers. The purpose og building the wall was for protection. It worked for only some of the times. In the Ming dynasty, there were 16 emperors who had reigned in China and 13 of them were burried in this area of Tianshoushang Mountain. Since The Ming Tomb is on the way to the wall, visit to both places are conbined in one day.
- Full day Terra-cotta Army Museum / Banpo Neolithic Village Museum / Big Wild Goose Pagoda. Thousands of life-sized Terra Cotta Warriors standing guard by the tomb of the emperor Qin Shi Huangdi for over 2000 years were discovered accidentally by a group of peasants digging in 1974. This excavation in Lintong, about 40 km east of Xi'an, was one of the century's greatest archeological discoveries. Three vaults containing the figures of men, horses and chariots can be visited. The excavated Banpo Village has been protected by the construction of a free-standing building that covers the entire site of a neolithic community which practiced the Yangshao culture (c.6000 BC).Visitors view the original foundations, along with a reconstruted replica of a house, from a wooden walkway. The Buddhist Temple is believed to have been named after a Big Wild Goose Pogoda in India, which was called that because it was built on the site where a wild goose fell from the sky in answer to the prayers of a group starving Buddhist monks. To express their gratitude they burried the goose instead of eating it, and later built the temple. Xi'an's Big Wild Goose Pogoda was restored in 1950s and offers an excellent view of the city and surrounding area.
Facts about Russia:
«Kaliningrad»
Kaliningrad is a low-budget city break away from the tourist trail. Though it can’t compete with more glamorous counterparts such as Moscow, it’s much cheaper and offers a different, less-trodden experience at a time of rapid change.
Despite the size, Kaliningrad surprisingly has a lot to offer thanks to the intertwined history of the city. The city is more famously known as being philosopher Immanuel Kant’s birthplace, Königsberg – a name it retained until it fell into Soviet hands in 1945.
Having fallen on hard times with the collapse of the Soviet Union, the exclave has undergone a recent recovery, having been given special economic status.
To cover all the city at least 3 days will be needed.
Day 1
Kant’s Cathedral
The city’s iconic Gothic-style Lutheran cathedral, started in 1333 and completed over the course of the 14th century in the red brick which punctuates so much of Hanseatic architecture, has had to bounce back from some serious setbacks over the centuries. Sitting bang in the middle of Kant Island in the Pregel River, hundreds of stout oaken stilts had to be inserted into the boggy ground before work could even begin and, having partially overcome that initial hurdle (subsidence is still a pressing issue), it had to be restored several times as a result of devastating fires. Indeed, the highly conspicuous absence of one of the two original spires was the result of one such fire in 1544. WW2 saw the cathedral more thoroughly destroyed, this time by Allied air raids, and it remained in ruins until 1992 when a huge rebuilding project got underway.

Inside you can normally get access to the church part downstairs and/or the Kant Museum, which is located up a steep spiral staircase in the foyer. The church part interestingly features both a Lutheran chapel (located under the restored spire, where a group of around 100 sheltering civilians died during a WW2 air raid) and a Russian Orthodox chapel, the latter one also being added during refurbishment in the early-1990s to symbolise reconciliation within the local community.
Amber Museum
The Amber Museum is a one-mineral treasury. The Museum exposition occupies three floors with a total space of 1,000 square meters. Thematically, it consists of two sections: one is devoted to science – natural history and geology and the other – to history and culture.
Amber is fossilized resin of ancient conifers that grew more than 40 million years ago on the territory of modern south of the Scandinavian Peninsula and adjoining part of the Baltic Sea bed.
In the scientific part of the exposition amber samples of different weight, colour, clarity are presented. In exposition are the biggest “sunstone” in Russia weighing 4.28 kilograms. The considerable part of the collection includes amber specimens with inclusions of animals and plant remains that were stuck in liquid viscous resin about millions years ago. The inclusions are the thing of great interest of scientist due to their variety and very good preservation. They are essential for specification our knowledge about flora and fauna of planet 40 – 45 million years ago. Today the collection of Kaliningrad amber museum is the main Russian national fund of Baltic amber inclusions.
Day 3
Curonian Spit
The Curonian Spit offers some of Europe’s finest landscapes as well as cozy towns and villages. Two of the most impressive ranges of dunes are the Grey Dunes (or the Dead Dunes) north of the village of Pervalka and the range of dunes. The Curonian Spit is UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to the great sand dunes. It is a unique and vulnerable, sandy and wooded cultural landscape on a coastal spit. The average height of the sand dunes is about 35 meters, but some are around 60 meters. There is only 1 single road which traverses the Curonian Spit.
Between Morskoye and Rybachy, there is dancing forest where the trunks “dance”. Almost every trunk is curiously shaped, with loops, bends and corkscrews more akin to Thorpe Park than a nature park.
The pines were planted in the Sixties to stabilise the giant dunes that flank either side of the spit – but it is the trees that seem unstable. Residents also refer to the crooked wood as the “Drunken Forest” and the phenomenon continues to baffle boffins.
Day 3
Zelenogradsk and Svetlogorsk
A one-day trip along the Zemland Peninsula offers tourists the chance to visit Zelenogradsk( Cranz) and Svetlogorsk(Rauschen) – the most beautiful resorts of Kaliningrad region.
The first stop is in Zelenogradsk/Cranz.
The German name Cranz, originally Cranzkuhren, derives from the old Prussian word krantas, meaning “the coast”. Zelenogradsk has become well-known since 1816, now it is the most favorite place for Kaliningrad citizens and visitors.
Zelenogradsk preserves the charm of a small flat sea town with its streets leading to the man-made parapet on the seaside. The underwater sea currents create most favourable resort conditions in this area. Zelenogradsk is located within a 10 minutes drive from the unique sanctuary ‘the Curonian spit’.
Next stop is the acknowledged tourist centre – Svetlogorsk/Rauschen – it became known as a resort in 1913. You will enjoy the town’s treelined streets, pine woods and beaches as well as visit a former Catholic church, the XIXth century Water Tower and Art Noveau Bathhouse.

«Time for a glass of wine»
When we are trying to remember the most popular Russian alcoholic drink, in almost all the cases we would come up with vodka. And that is such a cliché.
Marlis Travel breaks down the myth about an exclusiveness of vodka on Russian market presenting a brand new degustation tour - a trip to Fanagoria wine house.
The vineyards of Fanagoria are located on the Taman Peninsula, between the Taman Bay of the Black Sea and the Azov Sea. According to the climatic zoning they are located in the Taman district of the Anapa-Taman subzone of the Black Sea climatic zone of the Krasnodar Territory. The first modern vineyards were planted here in 1954
Today Phanagoria is one of the largest wineries in Russia. Vineyards occupy an area of more than 3000 hectares and are a guarantee of the quality of the products. At the enterprise the full cycle of winemaking is carried out - from production of seedlings to processing of grapes and distribution system.

«Costs»
Moscow is considered to be the third most expensive city in the world after Tokyo and New-York. St.Petersburg is a bit cheaper. However, that generally relates to the real estate prices, restaurant bills and things like that. The prices for drinks or groceries are not so bad. Here are some costs (see the exchange rates above for comparison):
- 1) Metro card 30 rbls
- 2) Big Mac 87rbls
- 3) Coca-Cola 50 rbls
- 4) 2-course lunch at «Mu-mu» 250 rbls
- 5) 30 min taxi ride 400-600 rbls
- 6) A cup of coffee 240 rbls
Note: never try to get a taxi from the airport by yourself, from the people standing there and offering you a ride. That'd be a mockery that may cost you a couple of hundred dollars. Even unaware russians get themselves tricked all the time.Facts about Russia:

«To the moon!»
One of the most outstanding fields Russia is proud of is spaceship technologies.
The Soviet space program comprised several of the rocket and space exploration programs conducted by the Soviet Union (USSR) from the 1930s until its collapse in 1991. Over its sixty-year history, this primarily classified military program was responsible for a number of pioneering accomplishments in space flight, including the first intercontinental ballistic missile (R-7), first satellite (Sputnik 1), first animal in Earth orbit (the dog Laika on Sputnik 2), first human in space and Earth orbit (cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin on Vostok 1), first woman in space and Earth orbit (cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova on Vostok 6), first spacewalk (cosmonaut Alexey Leonov on Voskhod 2), first Moon impact (Luna 2), first image of the far side of the moon (Luna 3) and unmanned lunar soft landing (Luna 9), first space rover (Lunokhod 1), first sample of lunar soil automatically extracted and brought to Earth (Luna 16), and first space station (Salyut 1). Further notable records included the first interplanetary probes: Venera 1 and Mars 1 to fly by Venus and Mars, respectively, Venera 3 and Mars 2 to impact the respective planet surface, and Venera 7 and Mars 3 to make soft landings on these planets.
This is why we encourage all our guests to pay a visit to one of the best museums of Russia, dedicated to the development of sapce program : Museum of Cosmonautics.
This museum, the only one of its kind, situated inside an enormous monument to the explorers of the cosmos, is well worth the visit, not least for the nostalgia it should inspire in anyone who grew up in the heady days of the space race.
The displays trace the history of space exploration, including the first interplanetary satellite flights, the first dogs in space and man's journeys to the cosmos. There's plenty of fun gadgetry, plus an excellently conceived display explaining how astronauts survive a space flight, all of which should be interesting for children.
Apart from anything else, the shear aesthetic beauty of the displays should impress. The other-wordly sheen of the hi-tech materials used to construct space craft is extraordinary when seen close-up and, combined with a host of cosmos-themed artwork, the exhibition is a compelling reminder of the time when space exploration was still viewed unequivocally as mankind's last great adventure.

«Soup In a Bread Or What Do You Know About Russian Cuisine?»
Russia is famous by its architecture, history, literature and cold weather. However, Russian cuisine is often put aside. We suppose that is not fair as Russian dishes is not just food, but a masterpiece.
It seems that everyone knows borsch (a soup from beetroot with some sour cream) as a specialty of Russian cuisine. Actually, it is not quite true. Borsch is popular only in the Western part of post-Soviet Union, while central regions prefer another soup - rassolnik.
What is Rassolnik?
Rassolnik is a soup made from pickled cucumbers, pearl barley, and pork or beef kidneys. The dish is known to have existed as far back as the 15th century, when it was called kalya. It was a food of peasants as the dish is easy to cook and the ingredients are easy to find. That is a soup of generations as rassolnik became a part of common Soviet cuisine and is loved by Russians even now.
Not only is Rassolnik tasty, but also good for your health. The secret is pickled cucumbers. The fermentation that these cucumbers make help the stomach to digest junk food, pork of beef kidneys give strength while pearl barley is a literally inside-scrab for your skin. In other words "A plate of Rassolnik a day keeps the doctor away".
During programs that Marlis Travel does, tourists get acquainted with Russian cuisine and Rassolnik especially. All the dishes are home-made and served in a traditional way. For example, Rassolnik is served in a plate made of bread, that makes a soup more nourishing.

«Shopping!»
You can buy anything in Russian cities especially if you have cash you could find what you're looking for at the markets, malls, shops etc. There are many things, souviners, to buy if you know where and what to look for.
The most popular and the most classic souvenir from Russia is matryoshka, the set of wooden dolls placed one inside the other. The first nesting dolls were carved in 1890 by a design by Sergey Malyutin inspired by souvenir dolls from Japan as wooden toys for kids. The number of nested figures can be as few as five or as many as twenty. The dolls are typically made of linden tree (basswood), dried for at least 2 years to ensure their stability. The most traditional design is one that looks like a peasant girls dressed in Russian native costume with a scarf on her head, Today there is a big variety of the themes: from animals to movie stars etc.
If you are looking for a present for your mom, grandmother or even girlfriend the best option will be traditional Russian wool schawls and silk scarves. There are 2 cities which are famous by producing these products: Pavlov Posad and Orenburg. Since old times Russian schalws and scarves were obligatory parts of woman’s costumes and they had large importance. This time a woman, who went to the church, should have her head covered with a shawl or a stole. In accordance with Russian traditions a married woman could not be in public without a shawl on her head. There are plenty colours, prints and sizes, huge possibilities of wear and it's probably one of the reason why they are so popular as a stylish accessory
Another attractive Russian craft is palekh - enamel wooden box. The boxes feature intricately hand-drawn miniature paintings based on a variety of themes, including fairy tales, poems, country life, troikas, landscapes, battle scenes, and old art masterpieces. But they're usually quite expensive. Cheeper but joyful are the red, gold wooden cups, spoons from Khokhloma.
Gzhel porcelain decorated with fancy blue painting has wide popularity. Gzhel ware is decorated with flowers, leaves, bunches and garlands of flowers. They are painted with the only colour - blue cobalt, which is sometimes laid wide and rich dab and other times in hardly noticeable touch of the brush. Touches of different intensity create a rich, bright and very impressive picture.
You can also bring from Russia: fur, paintings from the street artists, caviar and vodka (Russia is the best place to buy it), amber, chocolate, posters with the Soviet theme, pirate CDs, DVDs and CD-ROMs, Russian linen, old Soviet stuff such as the pins shown in the attached photos, cigarette cases, tea holders, Lenin busts, hats, etc.
Enjoy your time in Russia!

«Welcome to Uzbekistan!»
Marlis Travel is glad to introduce a new Uzbekistan tour!
The Republic of Uzbekistan is situated in the central part of Central Asia between two rivers: Amu Darya and Syr Darya. There are Turan Lowland in the northwest, and Tien-Shan and Pamir-Alay mountain ridges in the southeast of the territory. Kyzyl Kum Desert is in the North. Uzbekistan borders Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Tadjikistan, and Afghanistan in the South.
The tour covers three main historical sities of Uzbekistan: Tashkent, Bukhara and Samarkand. Ancient cities of Uzbekistan - Samarkand, Bukhara and Tashkent, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List delight tourists with historical architectural monuments that inhaled spirit of the Great Silk Road caravans. Though sights of Uzbekistan are not only about monumental madrasas and minarets, mausoleums of rulers and spiritual leaders.
Well balanced combination of modern metropolis and the unique flavor of eastern city await you in Tashkent - the capital of Uzbekistan and the largest metropolis in Central Asia. Thus it becomes more valuable when we see preserved blue domes of mosques and madrassas of the Old Town - the area which is associated with the ancient, medieval and colonial past of Tashkent. This part of town is full of traditional neighborhoods of artisans, skilled craftsmen in wood and metal, and also excellent bakers, pastry-cooks and chefs of inimitable Uzbek cuisine.
Samarkand is a cultural treasury of the peoples of the East, with medieval architectural monuments unique in beauty and architectural forms, extant up to date. Modern Samarkand differs much from its medieval image: the city has changed but the domes, towers, and magnificent building arches decorated with mosaic patterns are still sparkling in the sun and drawing the eyes. The Samarkand sights and monuments, rightly included into the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List, like pages of an old book, narrate the history of establishment and development of Samarkand – the city-crossroad of cultures.

«Perm»
When the time came to build the Trans-Siberian Railroad, Perm was the obvious spot to begin. The part of the railroad officially titled 'The Trans-Siberian Railway' began from Perm' - you can see the Old Railway Station in Perm, where it began. Perm' was also a major transit centre for deporting convicts to Siberia.
By a strange irony, Perm is world-famous under a literary pseudonym. In the famous novel Dr Zhivago by Boris Pasternak, the city appears under the fictional name of 'Yuriatin', and is the main setting for the action of the story - it's where Yuri Zhivago meets Lara, and where their famous romance takes place against the background of the Russian Civil War.
During the Soviet period, the armaments industry around Perm was so secret that it was a 'closed city' - not even Russians could visit without special permits. This made it a perfect area in which to conceal 'Gulag' prison-camps.
The Kungur Ice Caves. A visit to an underground system of stalactite caves, with spectacular formations and dramatic lighting effects. No clambering is required! The entire (guided) visit is through former mining shafts which have been equipped with modern concrete paving and handrails
